Another Milestone for Big Daddy - Garlits Introduces New Mopar(R) Wynn's Charger(TM) Dragster Supercharged Nitro-Burning Front-Engine Dragster Features New HEMI(R) Power Plant, Celebrates Wynn's Heritage

AZUSA, Calif., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Another first for Big Daddy-Don Garlits supercharges a new Mopar(R) 392 HEMI(R) Crate Engine with a vintage 6-71 blower and takes it back in time to power his historic Swamp Rat XII dragster. The new adaptation, christened the Mopar Wynn's Charger dragster, commemorates his long association with both Chrysler and Wynn's.

Garlits gave the 392 HEMI(R) Crate Engine the full AA fuel dragster treatment by not only supercharging it, but also by converting it to run on nitro. The result: A 392 HEMI Crate Engine like nobody has seen before -- a modern HEMI with all the nostalgia parts and pieces that turns it into a fire breathing, ear-splitting terror.

The Mopar Wynn's Charger made its debut in the Mopar booth at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, October 30 -- Nov 1, 2007, and then headed back to Florida for the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) show in Orlando, December 6-8, 2007.

In building the new Mopar dragster, Garlits started with the historic Swamp Rat 12-A, a front engine fuel dragster he ran in the '60s. Mopar provided the 392 HEMI Crate Engine and, with Wynn's sponsorship, Garlits restored the chassis and hand-built the special parts to adapt an engine that had never, until now, seen a load of nitro. It will run on an 80% mix.

"We are in exciting new territory with this engine," says Garlits. "We will creep up on it -- run cacklefests for now, then get into burnouts later."

The new 392 HEMI Crate Engine is the latest chapter in Big Daddy's long history with Mopar, starting with the 331-cubic-inch Chrysler FirePower HEMI V8 he adopted in 1956. Fifty years ago, in 1957, he upgraded to the new 392 FirePower HEMI and started a long series of record-breaking performances. Then, in 1959, Garlits added a 6-71 supercharger for the first time. He never looked back. Even when Chevrolet and Ford came knocking with fistfuls of dollars, Big Daddy stood firm. "I like my Chryslers," he said. "Money wasn't always everything."

The new Mopar Wynn's Charger also marks the renewal of Wynn's sponsorship of Don Garlits. The relationship began in 1960 when a Wynn's decal first appeared on Swamp Rat III. "Wynn's was the first company to sponsor me," said Big Daddy. "Before that, the only help I got was free parts." The name "Wynn's Jammer" appeared on Swamp Rat VII a few years later. The current name, "Wynn's Charger," was on Swamp Rat X and was last seen on Swamp Rat XXIII in 1977.

"We're thrilled to be supporting Don Garlits on this project," said Gerry Miles, general manager of Wynn's. "This revives a proud relationship with Big Daddy that dates back to the 1960s, and to be part of such a groundbreaking project is truly exciting."
